Half-Life was the pioneer of interactive storytelling, allowing players to remain in full control of their character while engaging in memorable dialogue that would typically be relegated to a cutscene. Hell, Resistance 3 is a Jive Bunny Megamix of Valves masterpiece. Updated Half-Lifes community has made incredible mods over the years, and here are the best ones yet. And additionally, almost all of Half-Life 2s locations and set-pieces have since been riffed on by other developers.
Look for that technique in almost any FPS since, and youll find it. You probably didnt notice this when you were playing, but your brain did.

As for WON HL, theres no way to accomplish this.
I dont know whether or not this works with non-Steam Half-Life. Servers still have to be started with the -numedicts command line argument. There are a few missteps - Ive always felt like Route Kanal goes on slightly too long - but otherwise, the pacing and range of set-pieces is masterful. That way players wont have to set it manually in Steam. Everything else aside, Half-Life 2 is just a brilliantly designed game.
